The Great Contributions of Betsy DeVos in Revolving Education and Other Sectors

Betsy DeVos is a renowned philanthropist and a political person as well. She is a member of the Republican Party. Betsy DeVos is married to Dick DeVos. The DeVos family is the 18th richest family in the United States of America, with a net worth estimate of about 5 billion United States dollars.

I greatly admire her philanthropic activities which are aimed a lot at improving education and ensuring quality standards in the sector. Other fields include healthcare, evangelism, among others. Betsy DeVos and her beloved husband DeVos launched a foundation for their philanthropic works. The Dick & Betsy DeVos Foundation, which was founded in the year 1989, has so far done a lot. Mainly it’s worth noting that most of the contributions this foundation makes go to Christian organizations. Some of the organizations I have come across include The Baptists for Life, Action Institute, Center for individual rights among many others. I’ve noticed that between the year 1999 and 2014, the foundation donated about $5 million to charter schools’. Other contributions were directed to specific institutions such as Grand Rapids Christian High School Association which was given about $650 to $2,000. At the same time, Ada Christian School was also given about $148,000 in donations.

Moreover, Betsy DeVos is also the chairperson of the Philanthropy Round table. She also serves as the chairperson of American Federation (AFC) and the Alliance for School Choice. I find her interest in education to be amazing, she describes that her zeal to see other children also have good quality education having come from her visit to Potter House Christian School. At that age, she also had kids who were also going to school. From then up to now, I am happy that she has been able to support the school to become a safe environment whereby children can attend school and be exposed to endless possibilities. I’m personally baffled by the efforts of Betsy DeVos in the education sector. At one point, Betsy and her husband Dick DeVos were politically involved in the quest to amend the constitution to allow tax-credit scholarships. They tried all this in the state of Michigan. Although their campaign was unsuccessful, they never stopped, she started a committee called Great Lakes Education Project. This committee was aimed in revolving and also expanding charter schools in Michigan. Within a period of two years, the project was successful in Michigan from the year 2002. The success motivated her to make the project national. I give credit to Betsy for her great philanthropic activities and her efforts in improving the education sector.

According to the world’s statistics, George Soros is the third largest philanthropist with his donations totaling to over $12 billion. Having experienced injustice firsthand, Mr. George has a passion for charity. The causes George Soros supports through his philanthropy are quite many, however, the common underlying factor with all of them helping people who are discriminated based on who they are. To understand George and his philanthropy works, it is important we go through his life. Here are some of the points worth noting.

George Soros was born in 1930 in Hungary. Having been brought up during the Holocaust of 1944-1945, George was able to have the firsthand account and witness the brutal murder of more than five hundred thousand Hungarian Jews by then government. Luckily, for the Soros’s family, they were able to escape by concealing their identities and also helping others they could. After the end of the revolution, George was able to migrate to London, UK in search of greener pastures. While in London, George enrolled for economics at the London school of Economics, financing his studies by working as a nightclub waiter and railway porter. In addition to studying economics, Mr. George also took an interest in Karl Popper’s book “The Open Society and Its Enemies.” Arguably it is with this background and the brutal experiences that Soros founded his philanthropy. After graduating from the London school of Economics in 1952, George Soros was involved in some financial investment before sailing to the US to work as a broker in one of the best Wall Street brokerage firm, F.M. Mayer. Soros worked for the company and a number of other enterprises, gaining experience. In 1973, Soros took a life-changing career risk and started his own hedge fund known as the Soros Fund Management with an initial investment of $12 million. Thanks to Soros expertise and industry’s experience the fund was able to able to gain much success in the American history.

George Soros began to actively take part in philanthropic activities in 1979. Some of the activities George was involved in included offering scholarship to the apartheid black South Africans, nurturing critical thinking by creating Central European University, and funding cultural exchange program between the West and Europe to help his Soviet nation open up to the world.

1984 saw George Soros launch the Open Society Foundations. To date, George has been using this foundation to reach out to the oppressed and marginalized people in the society. With a network of over 100 countries, the Open Society Foundations has helped champion the freedom of expression, human rights, education, health, politics, and democratic governance among many other causes. Jason Hope is an American Entrepreneur, Investor, and Philanthropist currently based in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is very passionate about the work being done at the SENS Foundation and has donated over $400,000 to fund their research.

In December of 2010, Jason Hope donated $500,000 to the SENS Foundation. He chose the SENS Foundation because of their goal of transforming the way the world treats age-related disease.

The SENS Foundation is currently researching ways to prevent cellular damage that causes aging and to cure diseases such as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and lung disease. They are focusing on completely curing diseases with this method, rather than just treating them.
